The journey from UT’s 40 acres to the global stage is a transformative experience, according to international business alumnus Mike Kelly. Mike’s story underscores the benefits of a global mindset for career trajectories and problem-solving approaches.

Mike arrived at UT with a passion for foreign languages and travel, which caused him to major in international business and study abroad in Paris, France. He followed his undergraduate experience with an international MBA from the Thunderbird School of Global Management.

Mike says his international business education greatly contributed to his skill in navigating complex global environments. He emphasizes the importance of language foreign language skills (he speaks several) in his career trajectory, saying, “The ability to speak and understand the local language, at any proficiency level, is a game changer. Working with others in their local language provides the opportunity for a deeper discussion.”

Mike Kelly (’85), Director of Business Development Americas at SeekOps Inc.

During his career, Mike has worked in operations and business development throughout the world. He is currently Director of Business Development Americas at SeekOps Inc., a company offering technology-based ESG solutions for companies in the energy and waste management sectors.

Mike is also a guest speaker and sought-out mentor to international business students, who appreciate lessons from his extensive global experience. He advises students preparing for international careers to develop and practice foreign language skills, regardless of proficiency level. “It’s a key that opens doors to better cultural understanding and successful international business ventures”, he says.
