The Global Career Launch: Making Impacts in Mexico program offers an unparalleled opportunity for undergraduate UT students to immerse themselves in the rich culture of Oaxaca, Mexico while promoting human rights and economic empowerment.

The program’s core mission is to provide participants with hands-on experience working alongside local artisans and entrepreneurs, implementing business strategies to market their products and foster sustainable growth. Guided by McCombs faculty and MBA students, the program collaborates with the local organization Tejiendo Alianzas (Weaving Partnerships), dedicated to empowering marginalized communities by helping Oaxacans establish their businesses.

Through DAVA Artisan Design, Tejiendo Alianzas partners with 15 women from the Zapotec indigenous community of San Dionisio Ocotepec. These artisans, who have historically faced economic and social discrimination, handcraft sandals and shoes. As consultants, program participants propose and execute strategies to enhance DAVA’s business, promoting economic self-sufficiency for indigenous women.

Beyond the entrepreneurial experience, the Making Impacts in Mexico program offers immersive cultural encounters that celebrate indigenous traditions. Students visit the Tlacolula market, take tortilla-making classes, witness the chocolate production process at Tia Mago, and explore other authentic aspects of Oaxacan life.

The Garcia family, owners of DAVA Artisan Design, generously host the participants in their home, providing lodging, authentic cuisine, and a glimpse into local life across from DAVA’s headquarters. A typical day involves assisting DAVA until lunchtime, followed by continued support or cultural exploration.

By collaborating with local artisans and embracing Oaxaca’s rich heritage, the Making Impacts in Mexico program equips students with invaluable skills while promoting human rights, cultural preservation, and economic empowerment for indigenous communities. Such initiatives fuel sustainable growth despite the lack of state-level development, making this an unparalleled experience for aspiring entrepreneurs and advocates alike.
